Brampton, the seat of Peel Region, is a suburban city in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), immediately north-west of Metro Toronto.
As of the 2011 Census, Brampton's population was 523,911. Brampton is the third-largest city in the Greater Toronto Area, and the ninth-largest city in Canada. With the median age at 33.7, it's the youngest community in the GTA.
Incorporated as a village in 1853, Brampton was once known as "The Flower Town of Canada", a title based on its large greenhouse industry.Communities within the City of Brampton include Downtown [Old] Brampton, Bramalea, Churchville, Huttonville, Springbrook, Mount Pleasant, Snelgrove, Ridgehill, Ebeneezer, Castlemore, Coleraine, Wildfield, and Tullamore, Heat Lake, Peel Village, Armbro Heights, Fletcher's Meadow and Fletcher's Creek.
Modern Brampton's economy includes advanced manufacturing, retail administration & logistics, information & communication technologies, food & beverage, life sciences, and business services.
Two main school boards operate in Brampton: the Peel District School Board, which operates secular anglophone public schools, and Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board, which operates Catholic anglophone public schools.
