Markham [York Region] - Community Summary
Markham is a city in the Regional Municipality of York, within the GTA. It is the fourth largest community within the Greater Toronto Area with a population of more than 300,000.
Through much of Markham's history the community has been an agricultural center. Today, "business services" employ the largest proportion of workers in Markham - nearly 22% of its labour force. Markham also has over 900 technology and life-sciences companies, with IBM as the city's largest employer. Other multinational companies have located their Canadian headquarters in Markham, including Honda Canada, Hyundai, Advanced Micro Devices, American Express, Johnson & Johnson, Apple Inc., Avaya, IBM, Motorola, Oracle, Toshiba, Toyota Financial Services and Honeywell.
Markham has a number of both public and Catholic high schools. All have consistently scored high on standardized tests and have some of the highest rate of graduates attending universities.
Markham is home to several large malls including Market Village (170 stores), Markville Shopping Centre (250 stores), Pacific Mall (450 mini-shops), and The Mall at South Unionville Square (300 stores).
