Richmond Hill Community Summary
The Town of Richmond Hill is located in the central portion of York Region. Richmond Hill is located about halfway between Toronto and Lake Simcoe. The third most populous municipality in York Region and the 28th most populous municipality in Canada, Richmond Hill was called the "Rose Capital of the World". The town is home to the world-renowned David Dunlap Observatory telescope which is the largest in Canada.
Richmond Hill has 166 parks, including Richmond Green Sports Centre and Park with several baseball diamonds, two ice skating rinks, a 300-person amphitheatre and a skateboard park. The Richmond Hill Lawn Tennis Club is the town's community tennis club.
Richmond Hill is also home to the Richmond Hill Country Club, the Summit Golf & Country Club, and the Bloomington Downs Golf Course.
The York Region District School Board operates 25 public elementary schools in Richmond Hill. It also operates 5 secondary schools in Richmond Hill: Alexander Mackenzie High School, Bayview Secondary School, Langstaff Secondary School, Richmond Green Secondary School and Richmond Hill High School. Students in schools in the York Region District School Board have scored above the provincial average on the Assessment of Reading, Writing and Mathematics.
The York Catholic District School Board operates 13 Catholic elementary schools in Richmond Hill. It also operates two Catholic secondary schools, St. Theresa of Lisieux Catholic High School and Jean Vanier Catholic High School.
Being right in the centre of the Greater Toronto Area geographically speaking, Richmond Hill is full of facilities and commercial areas for its residents.
The geographically elevated town is neighboured by Vaughan, Markham and Whitchurch-Stouffville, and found south of the Town of Aurora. With its close proximity to Toronto, Richmond Hill is one of the municipalities in the Greater Toronto Area with a fast-growing population. Its most prominent landmark is the Oak Ridges Moraine or the "rain barrel of Ontario." The town is also home to major employers such Johnson Insurance,BMW Canada, and Apotex Canada. Transportation in the town includes the York Region Transit's bus service with lines that operate along Yonge Street and Bayview Avenue to the Finch Subway Station.
Richmond Hill has many urbanized subdivisions found south of Elgin Mills Road with detached, semi-detached, and link style houses found near conservation areas. The town also has many freehold townhouses and condominium buildings. The town's heritage homes, styled as cottages or board and batten homes, that date back to the mid 1800s can be found downtown at Centre Street and Yonge.
Richmond Hill offers many artistic and cultural experiences for its residents. With places like the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts, the community can participate in events and view exhibits to experience the arts. Richmond Hill also showcases its history through the Regency-styled Richmond Hill Heritage Centre built in the 1840s. Richmond Hill is also a home to four libraries, including the Richmond Hill Public Library
Richmond Hill has many shopping and serving areas, as well as restaurants that cater to different palates and various price ranges. Yonge Street has many local boutiques and restaurants in its every corner. Movie theatres and big retailers such as Home Depot can be found in Bayview Glen Power Centre, which is also at Yonge Street. Richmond Hill's largest mall, Hillcrest Mall, is another commercial area offering over a hundred restaurants, shops, and services. There is also a Walmart branch for the residents’ grocery needs.
Richmond Hill also has many community centres that promote leisure, activity, and sports for its residents of all ages.Richmond Green Sports Centre and Park is the largest park in town that features picnic areas, a water play park, and a skateboarding park. It's a place for ice skating, soccer, baseball, and basketball as well. The McConaghy Center is another community center that holds activities and events for residents 55 years old and above. The town is also very bike-friendly with many shared bike routes and bike racks, allowing its residents to visit its attractions and travel with ease. Richmond Hill also has many hiking trails such as Beaufort Trail and East Humber Trail for people who want to enjoy walks. The town also has multiple tennis courts and major golf courses.
Despite the abundance of Richmond Hill's commercial areas, the town also features many beautiful spots of nature to visit. Many parks reside in Richmond Hill, including the recreational park by Wilcox Lake where families can have picnics or venture into fishing. Phyllis Rawlinson Park is known as a good place to have a barbeque. Richmond Hill also houses the David Dunlap Observatory, which has Canada's largest telescope and is the perfect place for stargazing.
York Region healthcare leader Mackenzie Health and its hospital Mackenzie Richmond Hill are based in Richmond Hill. There are also several walk-in clinics in town. The Langstaff Square Care Community, found near Yonge Street and Highway 7, also offers long term nursing care for senior citizens.
Known as "The Smart Place for Business" with an award-winning community, many people consider Richmond Hill opt to start and grow their business in town. And even with its award-winning status when it comes to business, Richmond Hill's multicultural community is still full of friendliness.
Some of the best neighbourhoods to find Bungalows for sale in Richmond Hill are Crosby, Harding, Mill Pond, North & South Richvale and both Oak Ridges and Oak Ridges-Lake Wilcox which are west and east of Yonge Street respectively in the northernmost part of Town.
